Choosing an airport
Choose the region before searching for a fare. Manas is the default for Bishkek, Chüy Region and most journeys in the north. Osh saves a long road transfer for southern cities and the Alay Valley. Tamchy and Karakol can work well for Issyk-Kul when the timetable aligns with the rest of your trip.
Manas, code BSZ
- The principal gateway for the capital and usually the broadest choice of international services.
- The airport-to-city transfer is a separate part of the journey.
- A practical starting point for Issyk-Kul, Naryn and western Kyrgyzstan when no regional flight fits.
Osh, code OSS
- More convenient than Manas for Osh and most southern itineraries.
- Check the international or domestic flight separately from your onward road journey.
- For Jalal-Abad, compare the actual ticket with the complete ground plan.
Issyk-Kul at Tamchy
- Shortens the transfer to Tamchy, Chok-Tal and Cholpon-Ata.
- Routes and frequency are seasonal.
- You still need transport from the terminal to your actual accommodation.
Karakol
- Can avoid a long drive from the western end of the lake.
- International status does not create a daily timetable.
- Keep any ground alternative flexible until both outbound and return flights are ticketed.
What international status means
Kyrgyzstan's Aeronautical Information Publication names Manas, Osh, Issyk-Kul and Karakol as aerodromes available for international flights. That means the required procedures can be provided for this type of operation. It does not promise a daily international service, a large airline network or a convenient connection.
A useful route exists only when an airline has put a flight on sale for your date. A charter, summer programme or one-off operation may not return the following season. An old timetable screenshot is evidence of a past service, not a current booking option.
Manas for Bishkek and northern Kyrgyzstan
Manas International Airport lies outside Bishkek. It is the standard arrival point for the capital, with more carriers and a better chance of finding an alternative when schedules change. The transfer into town still needs planning, especially when a flight lands after midnight and your accommodation has limited reception hours.
The airport's IATA code changed from FRU to BSZ on 9 August 2025. Older articles and messages may still contain FRU, but use BSZ and the name Manas for a new search. Airports of Kyrgyzstan published the official code-change notice.

Osh for southern Kyrgyzstan
Osh Airport sits close to the city and is the natural gateway for Osh, Uzgen, the Alay Valley and many southern routes. Arriving through Manas for an entirely southern itinerary creates either a long drive or a domestic flight.
Osh handles international and domestic traffic, but the cities and operating days change. If you have separate tickets, allow time to collect baggage, check in again and meet the second airline's rules. Two flights using the same airport do not automatically form a protected connection.

Issyk-Kul at Tamchy and Karakol Airport
Issyk-Kul Airport. The terminal is at Tamchy on the north shore. It is well placed for Tamchy, Chok-Tal and Cholpon-Ata. Reaching the eastern end of the lake and Karakol still requires a road transfer. Compare the whole door-to-door journey, not only the flight time.
Karakol. The airport is beside the principal tourism base in eastern Issyk-Kul. It reopened with upgraded status in 2024, but its route network depends on airline decisions. Use it only after a suitable outward and return flight can both be booked.

Regional airports: find the ticket first
Kyrgyzstan operates and rebuilds several regional airports, including Batken, Jalal-Abad and Razzakov. The presence of a runway or a new terminal does not establish a regular service. Domestic flights may run infrequently, and sales do not always open for a whole season at once.
Treat a flight to Batken or Jalal-Abad as a firm option only after ticketing. Keep a road alternative if the next stage depends on a permit, organised tour or international departure.
Checking a real flight
- Search the exact date. Use the airline or a booking system, not a general route list.
- Confirm the code and city. Manas uses BSZ and Osh uses OSS. Issyk-Kul Airport at Tamchy is not Karakol Airport.
- Open the booking with the carrier. Check payment, passenger name and any schedule change.
- Use the live board. Near departure, compare the airline status with the official Airports of Kyrgyzstan board.
- Check the return. A regional outbound service may not have a convenient flight back several days later.
- Keep a fallback flexible. Refundable ground travel or accommodation is valuable when a flight is seasonal or rare.
Transfers and late arrivals
An airport and its city are not a single point. Allow for immigration, baggage delivery, contacting your driver and the road itself. Public transport may operate differently after midnight, while car-rental and exchange desks keep their own hours.
For Manas, save your accommodation address in Russian or Kyrgyz and agree a meeting place. Osh has a shorter transfer, but a late arrival still calls for confirmed check-in. At Tamchy or Karakol, ask your accommodation for the fare, vehicle and driver's contact before boarding the flight.
When taking a taxi at the terminal, confirm the registration number and price before leaving. Do not hand an unlocked phone to a stranger to "arrange" payment, and do not enter a vehicle without a clear destination.
Baggage, check-in and mountain equipment
The airline sets the cabin and checked-baggage allowance, not the airport. A domestic sector can have different conditions from your international fare. Check weight, dimensions, the cost of an extra piece and whether allowances can be pooled between passengers.
Skis, bicycles, trekking poles, gas equipment and batteries need specific handling. Agree sports baggage before paying for the ticket. Camping gas cylinders are not ordinary checked equipment; buy permitted fuel after arrival.
