Kirgizia or Kyrgyzstan: which name is correct?
Use Kyrgyzstan in contemporary official and neutral English. The state’s full name is the Kyrgyz Republic. “Kirgizia” is an older Russian-derived name still encountered in historical material and Russian speech.
Short answer. Write Kyrgyzstan in documents, business correspondence and travel writing, and use it when speaking with residents. Kirgizia may appear in historical writing or in Russian. Do not confuse the official name of the state with the conventions of a particular language.

Why two forms exist
The state standard. Article 1 of the Constitution begins with “The Kyrgyz Republic (Kyrgyzstan)”. The state uses these full and short forms in laws and on official websites. The United Nations also lists the country as Kyrgyzstan in English.
Russian usage. Authoritative Russian dictionaries retain the traditional forms “Киргизия”, “киргиз” and “киргизский”. They developed long before independence and did not disappear when the official name changed. That is why the Russian-language question cannot be settled simply by declaring the older word grammatically wrong.
Our editorial choice. I Love KG uses Kyrgyzstan and Kyrgyz in English. In a quotation, historical document title or discussion of Russian usage, the original form is retained.

When the name Kyrgyzstan appeared
The name did not change in a single step with the collapse of the Soviet Union. In December 1990, the Supreme Soviet approved the name Republic of Kyrgyzstan and adopted a declaration of state sovereignty on 15 December. The republic declared state independence on 31 August 1991.
On 5 May 1993, the new Constitution established the name Kyrgyz Republic. The modern Constitution explicitly places the full and short forms together: “The Kyrgyz Republic (Kyrgyzstan)”.

Kyrgyz and Kirghiz
Modern international English normally uses Kyrgyz for the language, culture and people. The spelling Kirghiz remains visible in older English sources and in historical names derived from Russian usage.
Use Kyrgyz language for the country’s state language. Preserve the established name of a historical entity, such as Kirghiz SSR, and do not silently modernise the wording of a quotation.

Kyrgyz and Kyrgyzstani are not the same
Kyrgyz denotes ethnicity. Kyrgyzstani or citizen of Kyrgyzstan denotes a relationship with the state and says nothing about ethnicity. The country is home to people from many ethnic groups, so the terms are not interchangeable.
When ethnicity is irrelevant, “a resident of Kyrgyzstan” is the clearest wording. Historical names and exact quotations should preserve their own spelling.
What Kyrgyzstan means
The name combines the ethnonym Kyrgyz with the Persian-derived suffix -stan, meaning a country or place. Its literal sense is “country of the Kyrgyz”.
The origin of the ethnonym Kyrgyz itself remains a matter of academic debate. A popular account connects it with the number forty and a story about united tribes, but it should not be presented as a proven translation. Forty does appear in state symbolism: the sun on the flag of Kyrgyzstan has forty rays.
