Ask for the programme before travelling: “Salbuurun” does not guarantee every discipline. A demonstration may consist only of an eagle recall and lure exercise.
Three strands of Salbuurun
Burkut saluu
- Exercises test recall and work with a lure.
- Chyrga uses a lure moving along the ground.
- Undok measures the return to the handler.
Taigan zharysh
- The sighthound chases a moving lure.
- Officials measure speed and response.
- A demonstration does not need live prey.
Zhaa atuu
- Archery may appear as a separate event.
- The programme sets distance and target.
- The area behind the target stays closed.
A practice wider than one show
Historical Salbuurun is associated with extended group hunting and knowledge of terrain, animals and equipment. A modern festival breaks that system into separate, measurable exercises.
Kyrgyz documents submitted through UNESCO describe a complex involving eagles, taigan dogs and the bow. A championship may include only part of that list or divide birds into several disciplines.
Burkut saluu, chyrga and undok
In undok, a bird returns to the handler's call. In chyrga, it pursues a lure drawn along the ground. Officials score time, accuracy and completion under the event rules.
Training a bird takes years of repeated signals, feeding and trust. Our guide to berkutchi explains the handler, equipment and a respectful visitor encounter.

Taigan racing
The Kyrgyz taigan is a mountain sighthound. In competition it pursues a moving lure over a marked course. One heritage inventory mentions 350 metres, but a current organiser must publish its own distance and scoring.
Dogs need a warm-up, water, shade and rest. The lure and track should prevent collision, and spectators remain outside the course.
Choosing a respectful demonstration
Ask who owns and trains the animals, which exercises will be shown and whether live prey is involved. A responsible handler stops a flight in excessive heat, strong wind or visible stress.
Walk away if a bird is restrained by its wings, a dog is deliberately distressed or animals cannot retreat from the crowd. For a visitor archery lesson, use a separate controlled range described in our traditional archery guide.
Frequently asked questions
Is Salbuurun only eagle hunting?
No. The complex can include birds of prey, taigan dogs and archery. The event programme defines the actual line-up.
Is live prey used?
A tourist demonstration or sporting display can use an artificial lure. Ask in advance and decline a format that conflicts with your animal-welfare expectations.
Where can I see Salbuurun?
Demonstrations and festivals take place around Issyk-Kul and elsewhere, but there is no single permanent timetable. Contact the organiser before travelling.
