Choosing a route through Semenov Gorge
For a first visit, lower Kyrchyn is enough: drive from the village towards the Kichi-Ak-Suu River, walk beside the forest and return the same way. This takes half a day and does not require reaching a particular summit or lake.
Allow a full day for Sutuu-Bulak. Drive only as far as the ground permits, then walk about 5 km each way with roughly 500 metres of ascent. This is a separate hike, not a short detour from the main road.
A third option joins Semenov and Grigoriev gorges by a mountain road. Heavy rain washes out bridges and the surface, so the loop requires a high-clearance vehicle, an experienced driver and confirmation that the road is open on the day.
How to get there from Cholpon-Ata
Semenov Gorge lies about 40 km east of Cholpon-Ata. Turn off the northern-shore road around Issyk-Kul through Kojoyar-Ata, called Semenovka on older maps and in guidebooks. An ordinary road reaches the village and lower valley.
Higher up, asphalt gives way to gravel and earth. An ordinary car can cover much of the lower route in dry weather, although deep ruts and stones may stop one with low clearance. Do not continue after rain merely because a road appears on the map.
A waiting taxi can be booked from Cholpon-Ata, but agree separately on a through-loop or a transfer to the hiking start. Mobile reception disappears in the upper gorge, so arrange the return vehicle and meeting time before leaving.
Kyrchyn is exposed to debris flows. Kyrgyzstan's Ministry of Emergency Situations specifically records slope flows in this valley. Do not enter narrow channels or park beside the water during a thunderstorm or prolonged rain.
Why the valley is called Kyrchyn
The Kyrgyz name Kyrchyn refers to the broad valley and jailoo, or summer pasture. The Russian name Semenov became established in connection with geographer Pyotr Semenov-Tian-Shansky, who explored the Tian Shan in the nineteenth century.
Kyrchyn hosted the cultural programme of the World Nomad Games in 2014, 2016 and 2018. Surviving grounds and roads recall the large events, but outside a festival this is an ordinary working valley where people graze livestock, cut fodder and put up seasonal yurts.
A roadside yurt does not guarantee a cafΓ©, accommodation or performance. Greet people, ask before stopping and agree on the price of food or a horse ride in advance. Do not fly a drone over pasture without the owners' permission.

Spruce forest and pasture. Begin a short walk from any safe parking place in the lower valley. Do not drive onto grass, block livestock or light fires in conifer litter.
Sutuu-Bulak. The lake lies well above the main visitor area. Bring walking boots, water, waterproofs, a warm layer, an offline map and an early start. Do not turn it into an improvised winter walk through snow.
Horse rides. Choose a guide who provides a helmet and does not send a beginner directly onto a long mountain route. Agree on the price, duration and turning point before mounting.
For a relaxed day, arrive in the morning, explore lower Kyrchyn and return the same way. Add Sutuu-Bulak or the through-road only as a planned objective, not as an extension "if there is time".
